BS EN 16001:2009 Energy Management System
The brand new standard designed to help your organisation manage and reduce your energy consumption, and thereby reduce costs. Described as a company specific, focussed action plan to enable you to manage your energy consumption, it has the edge on general guidance documents that only provide generic advice.
BS EN 16001 is based on a methodology known as plan-do-check-act:
-
Plan: Identify energy aspects and legal obligations; establish energy objectives and targets.
-
Do: Assign resources and responsibilities; raise organizational awareness and provide training; communicate internally and externally; establish documentation; implement operational controls.
-
Check: Establish the monitoring of energy management programs; evaluate compliance with legal obligations; identify and manage non-conformance; control records; carry out internal audits of the energy management system.
-
Act: Review of energy management systems by management resulting in potential changes.
The management system format of plan-do-check-act is designed to ensure that BS EN 16001 can be used by any organisation. The requirements of the standard can also be aligned with those of other management systems such as quality (ISO9001) and environment (ISO 14001). Alternatively, it can be implemented on its own, making it as flexible as you need it to be.
BS EN 16001 applies to any organisation that wishes to:
- Improve energy performance in a systematic way
- Establish, implement, maintain and improve an energy management system
- Ensure that it conforms with its stated energy policy
- Demonstrate such conformance to others
- Seek certification of its energy management system by an external organization
- Make a self-evaluation and self-declaration of conformance with the standard.
