Energy Efficiency Improvements, Major Hotel, Austria

Client: Major Hotels Group
Location: Austria
Date: 2004
Project: Review of Electrical Consumption

In May 2004, the company re-opened the Hotel following a 60m euros refurbishment and extension. Within 3 months of the property re-opening, the hotel management realised that the electrical consumption was considerably higher than expected.

Staff at Abricon had surveyed the property in 1997 and were called back in to undertake a comparison of the electrical performance before and after the work.

The refurbishment was carried out to a high standard with all of the back-of-house technical areas incorporating modern system and control techniques. A large number of issues were however identified, and an action plan developed with the hotel’s management to reduce consumption.

The recommendations included:

  • Improving the awareness of hotel staff of energy issues.
  • Alterations to the hotels’ metering and data analysis system
  • Suggestions for tightening the control of the building’s HVAC systems by using the extensive BMS in a more pro-active manner
  • Modifications to the lighting installation in both public areas and guest bedrooms.

Many of the lighting related recommendations have also reduced the maintenance requirements, further increasing savings.
