Investigation and Risk Assessment Associated with Waste Dredge Spoil |
A stockpile consisting of soft sediment with building rubble located on the client's land was investigated by Abricon. The site is currently used for making steel structures for civil engineering, and one of its former uses included shipbuilding.
The EA were concerned about the potential impact the waste material could have on the adjacent River Wye, which is classed as a Special Area of Conservation. They advised that the material was defined as waste, and therefore required management under the Waste Management Licensing Regulations (1994).
Works carried out by Abricon comprised of advancing trial pits across the waste pile, obtaining representative samples, undertaking headspace analysis for Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and logging the trial pits to BS5930.
Soil analysis was undertaken in accordance with the EA MCERTS standard and included analysis of organic and inorganic determinands as well as leaching tests to assess the potential risk to controlled water receptors.
Abricon were able to show that the stockpile posed a minimal risk to potential receptors. This enabled us to enter into dialogue with the EA, and thereby allowed the Client to benefit from an exemption under waste permitting regulations.
