Groundwater Remediation of VOC Contamination, UK

Client: Confidential, Chemical Manufacturer
Location: Southern England, UK
Date: 2000 - 2002
Project: In-situ Remediation of Groundwater Contaminated by Volatile Organic Compounds

Located adjacent to a sensitive surface water receptor, the former chemical works occupied an area of approximately 1.4 ha.

The site was closed during the 1990’s following an extensive period of operation involving manufacture of a wide range of chemicals.

Soil remediation was conducted in parallel to the site decommissioning and demolition of above ground structures in advance of a groundwater remediation contract.

Abricon was appointed to complete the following works:

  • remediation options appraisal and on-site pilot study;
  • detailed design of groundwater sparge and vent system;
  • installation and operation of system designed to remove approximately 60% of estimated contaminant mass, (calculated to be of the order of 600kg total solvents);
  • On-going monitoring of the 60 well remediation system allowed identification of specific hot-spots of contamination, (Dichloroethane, Benzene and Dichloromethane and Chloroform)
  • and a second phase of targeted groundwater pumping and surface treatment by sparging was instigated.

The final total of solvent recovered exceeded 2000kg, at a total remediation cost of £750k.
