Geotechnical Services
Economy of design and construction relies on having accurate ground investigation data.
Abricon has the skills and experience necessary to perform rigorous geotechnical investigations, providing you with the most thorough understanding of the ground conditions at your site possible.
We take an integrated approach to geotechnical investigation, exploring both the surface and subsurface features of a site. Our engineers will perform a walk-over survey, looking for visual clues as to the ground conditions, and can undertake an initial full desk study of the area if requested.
Follow on intrusive works are always targeted and carried out to the highest specifications as set out in BS 5930 and Eurocode 7 - Geotechnical Design.
We never cut corners as we know estimations can lead to overly conservative design or even, in the worst case scenario, failure of structures.
In sensitive, difficult or occupied sites we can even arrange for an non-intrusive geophysical survey; either to help target works and reduce site disturbance, or in-place of intrusive works altogether.
Abricon can advise on the bearing capacity of soils, slope stability, perform kinematic analysis, and comment on choice of foundation.
To obtain information about the soil conditions below the surface, some form of subsurface exploration is usually required.
Abricon can help with:
- Trial Pits
- Trial Trenching
- Rotary Drilling
- Cable Percussion Drilling (Cable Tool/ Shell and Auger)
- Window/ Windowless Sampling
- Hand Auguring
- Undisturbed Sampling such as U100 tubes and MOSTAP sampling
And in-situ and field tests, such as:
- Cone Penetration Testing (CPT)
- Standard Penetration Test (SPTs)
- Shear Vane Test
- Direct Shear (Shear Box) Test
- Pocket Penetrometer Tests
- California Bearing Ratio
- Plate Load Tests
- Permeability and Hydraulic Conductivity Testing
A wide variety of laboratory tests can be performed on soils to measure a wide variety of soil properties. Abricon only uses UKAS accredited laboratories.
- Atterberg Limits
- Moisture Content
- California Bearing Ratio
- Expansion Index Test
- Hydraulic Conductivity Tests
- Oedometer Tests
- Particle-Size Determination (PSD) Tests
- Soil Compaction Tests
- Soil Suction Tests
- Triaxial Shear Tests
- Unconfined Compression Test
- Moisture Content
